Three steps to get you started as an email marketer

Follow these three steps to kickstart your email marketing journey today

Every day, I received questions about how to start as an email marketer. This article will provide you with an answer to this question and give you a three-step process that you can use and implement.

But before we go deeper.

Let's first define what a newbie is. Because the way I understand it, newbies:

• have no email marketing background
• have never enrolled in a course
• have not studied any resources about email marketing
• are not part of any community on email marketing.

Meaning newbies have zero knowledge. Do you agree?

Yeah?

What I am assuming is you don't have the experience, but you have the knowledge about email marketing. If that's the case, you are no longer a newbie. Does this describe you?

Or are you the former? If you are, this article is for you.

Here are the three steps to help you get started as an email marketer, like how I would do it if I were going to start again.

Define your market.

A clear target audience helps you create targeted content that resonates with them.

Here's how to define your target market:

➼ Create customer persona:

Create profiles that include demographics, interests, and pain points.

➼ Research:

Use online tools like Google Trends or follow and join conversations on social media to understand how your target market communicates and engages in a conversation.

➼ Survey:

You can indirectly conduct surveys without sending forms by asking people who engage with you what they like about your service (ex., email marketing) and what ESP feature they would like added to what they're using right now. Or what type of setback they've experienced in the past with email marketing.

Make a copy of this template.

Build a list of people that you interacted with.

These people you've interacted with may not become your client, but they're a connection you can leverage in the future.

Here's how to do it.

➼ Create a Google sheet:

Include their name, link to their social media profile, and their response to your questions or comments, and then add a short description. Segment this list based on interests, location, or behavior.

Make a copy of this sheet.

➼ Connect and engage with them:

You must connect with them because you can message them occasionally to see how things are going or introduce them to someone who might benefit from their business. And invite them to online events related to or relevant to their business.

Do not pitch unless you're asked to. Our goal here is to keep you under their radar. Use curiosity to pique their interest and make them want to continue the conversation.

Build your social media presence.

This activity helps introduce the people you engage with to you and your brand. You can start by posting about your offer or services and sharing valuable tips or resources.

Use the data you collected to personalize and create engaging content. So your post is the first thing the people who connect with you on social media can see.

Use images, GIFs, or videos to make them visually appealing. These assets increase engagement which will get the attention of your target audience. Videos also help showcase your services but make it simple to make sure your audiences are not overwhelmed.

In summary: engage ➼ profile your audience ➼ build

Do this because you want to be more than just someone your prospective clients interact with on social media. You want them to see you as the expert. As someone they can turn to when they need help with their business.

Do this because you want to influence them when they decide whom they will work with or whom they will refer to friends or colleagues. You want them to see you as the only viable option.

It may require a lot of work. But trust me on this. It gets easier over time.

That's it for now.
