Aspiring Email Marketers' Challenges: Lack of Knowledge
Practical Steps to Gather Information to Level Up Your Skill as an Email Marketer
This is the second part of the three-part article series about the challenges many aspiring email marketers face at the start of their careers: lack of resources, lack of knowledge, and limited time.
Today, we’re going to talk about the second challenge.
Lack of knowledge.
Many email marketers I talked to sometimes share that they don’t know about this or that, which is understandable, especially if you’re new to the industry.
To help you, I will share with you today the steps I did when starting my email marketing career that can help you become an expert in email marketing even if you don't have any experience yet.
Let’s begin.
Here are the things you need to do.
Read and research:
Start by reading as much as you can about email marketing. Look for articles, blog posts, and e-books that cover topics such as email list building, email design, segmentation, A/B testing, and more.
Many online resources can help you learn the ins and outs of email marketing.
Here are examples from FuelMade, Common Thread, and, lastly, from DesignModo.
Study successful email campaigns:
Look for successful email campaigns from brands in your industry or similar industries. Study what they are doing and how they crafted their messaging and design to achieve their goals.

Sign up for email marketing courses:
Take online courses or attend workshops to learn more about email marketing. There are a lot of platforms that offer email marketing lessons.
Klaviyo Academy.
Hubspot Academy.
Or this one from Udemy.
Practice with email marketing tools:
Sign up for email marketing tools like Mailchimp, Klaviyo, or Hubspot, and practice creating and sending email campaigns. This will give you hands-on experience with the tools and allow you to experiment with different email marketing strategies. You can also use this as a portfolio.
Follow these steps once you already have an account with an email service provider of your choice.
Network with other email marketers:
Join online communities or groups where you can connect with other email marketers. They can provide valuable insights and share their experiences, and you can learn from their successes and failures.
Remember, becoming an expert in email marketing takes time and dedication. But these resources can help shorten the time needed to gain experience and be an expert email marketer.
