From Zero to Email Marketing Hero: How to Build Your Portfolio and Attract Clients
Discover the actionable steps and insider tips a freelance email marketer used to land high-paying clients, even with no prior experience.
Still here at the coffee shop, sippin’ my iced coffee, doing an email sprint that I can schedule in advance.
This is the kind of job that I love to do. I hope you are, too.
In my last email, we talked about…
• Becoming the Klaviyo Wizard
• Shopify savvy
• Figma (Canva) Skills
• Learn the tools
• Get in on the trends
I hope that was helpful because today, I will provide you with actionable steps you can easily implement so you can land your dream clients.
Are you ready to rock?
Here’s the action plan:
1. Practice makes perfect
Nobody’s born an email marketing expert. It’s a learned skill. I recommend building your empire by creating campaigns for yourself, your friends, and that local coffee shop down the street—anyone with a business that will allow you to get hands-on experience in writing emails. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. You can use Figma or Canva to create email samples.
“Angeli, how can I make email samples? I have no idea.”
I'm glad you asked.

2. Be a sponge
Soak up all the knowledge you can. Take online courses, binge-watch webinars, and consume email marketing content like your favorite snacks. Knowledge is power, and this also applies to the freelance industry.
3. Network like a boss
Connect with fellow email marketers online or grab a coffee IRL. Share your wins, learn from their failures, and build your email marketing network. Trust me, it’s way more fun to learn and grow together.
4. Show off your skills
Package your experience and learnings. Share your email marketing experience on Linkedin, your website (if you have but not required), or anywhere potential clients might hang out. Let them see what you’re made of.
“Angeli, what if I don’t have any experience? What will I post on social media?”
Great question.
You can post the sample emails you created, your journey from zero knowledge about email marketing to learning about automation, your takeaway from a webinar you attended about email marketing, or what you’re doing now to get more information about email marketing. There’s definitely an endless source of topics you can share on social media to showcase your skill as an email marketer.
5. Subscribe to brands that you want to work with
I can’t stress how important this one is. How do you think I got this job from Tatay Fred?
Understand their emails' and products' themes, frequency, delivery, and positioning. What you’re receiving from these brands is the final output of weeks, sometimes months, of back-and-forth and idea exchange. These are possibly the best resources you can use as an email marketer. Leverage it.
I want to end it right here.
Obviously, there’s more. But I don’t want to overwhelm you.
But what I shared with you here are the steps that worked for Tatay and me.
Do this, and you’re on your way to becoming a highly in-demand email marketer charging premium fees and capable of delivering quality results.
